A majority of cat owners hug and kiss their furry friend on a daily basis, but does this convey just how much you love them? Cats express and recognize affection in different ways to humans, so showcasing your feelings can be a tall order. Try using some of the methods listed below to tell your cat you love them today (and every other day, too!).
The Slow Blink
Perhaps the most universally known way of saying “I love you” to your kitty. When doing this, make sure your eyes are relaxed and aren’t staring directly at your cat for long periods of time (Any more than a few seconds of staring is considered threatening to felines). Let your cat come to you and proceed to blink slowly in their direction – over time, they should start to reciprocate with a slow blink of their own.
Making Time For Them
It is no secret that most cats LOVE being the center of attention, which is exactly why making time for them is one of the top ways to show your affection. Whether you’re playing with their favourite toy or cuddling up on the sofa, spending time with your cat is one of the simplest ways to display your love.
Grooming and Cleaning
Brushing routines vary greatly for different breeds of cat. Some will happily sit there for hours if you let them, while others can only tolerate it for shorter sessions. It’s all about learning the preferences of your cat and respecting them.
There will also inevitably be parts that your feline friend misses (or simply can’t reach) when he or she is grooming on their own accord – You can help them out by using a cotton bud soaked in lukewarm water. They may not enjoy it at the time, but your cat will be thankful if you manage to remove a piece of dirt or residue that has been bothering them.
Keeping Them Healthy
Your cat trusts you to keep them healthy and like in any relationship, preserving this trust is a great way to make them feel loved. Make sure you are feeding them the correct amount of the right food while also allowing your cat to explore the outside world, particularly on warmer days.
Stimulate your cat by placing their treats inside one of the many toys available on the market – This will provide them with a mini physical and mental workout. Your cat will also see this as an exciting gift from you, further strengthening the bond you share (As long as they see you lay it down for them. You could even rattle the treats around as an incentive).
Those are just some of the ways you can convey love to your kitty in a way they can understand. If you’re curious about the signals a cat will use to return their affection, check out our other article titled ‘How To Know If Your Cat Loves You’.
